Grandparents Day is celebrated in United States on
the first Sunday after Labor Day, in September every year. It is
regarded as a secular holiday and a national observance there. In 2008,
Grandparents Day will be fall on 7th September. Going into the history
of Grandparents Day, the first one was celebrated in 1978. The then
President of United States Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation for the
holiday and declared it as a national observance for the country.
President Jimmy Carter proclaimed, "Grandparents are our
continuing tie to the near-past, to the events and beliefs and
experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us.
Whether they are our own or surrogate grandparents who fill some of the
gaps in our mobile society, our senior generation also provides our
society a link to our national heritage and traditions. We all know
grandparents whose values transcend passing fads and pressures, and who
possess the wisdom of distilled pain and joy."
Since its official announcement, Grandparents Day is celebrated with
great enthusiasm throughout the country. People invite their
grandparents and faraway acquaintances to join them in the celebrations.
Enthralling Grandparents Day parties are arranged in homes as well as
schools. Many interesting party activities and games are conducted to
keep the guests engaged for the whole day. People also deliver
Grandparents Day sermons that highlight the significance of this day and
the importance of grandparents in our lives.
